Literacy Day Lesson Ideas

Topics

  1. How could you use this brochure to create numeracy lessons?
  2. How could you use this brochure to create oral communication lessons?
  3. How could you incorporate this brochure into a computer lesson?
  4. How could you use this brochure to create written communication lessons?

Shirley Beall gave many examples of lessons based on materials she had found and some which that were brought in by her students. One of these was a Diabetes brochure.

Shirley then gave the four tables of participants ten minutes to make suggestions for ways in which the Brisbane City Council Transport Brochure – “Brisbane’s Best Point of View, City Sites” could be used. You will need to pick up a brochure to be able to relate to the points set out below.

These are some ideas which might help you when looking at encouraging students to learn new skills.

Topic 1 Relate to the Street Directory – Map reading – coordinates
Percentage to calculate discounts - concessions
Money handling- cost, penalty, fines- relate to weekly budget-in a context money for lunch, Cafe
Time- Calendar, Clock- activities, how long you would spend at each site? (discussion)
Timeline – Historical places eg Windmill –years
Data – Chance at Casino
Proportion – size of whale at Museum
Space- size 16 hectares quoted.
Number, Numerals, recognition, sequence following numbers on map. Trace the route using the numbers given on the brochure.
Topic 2 Be a tour guide – discuss word meanings so you could anticipate what you would expect to find- Historical, Cultural, Maritime
Give directions- how to get from one place to another
Using place names for a game where students take a name from the hat and describe it so other students can guess which place the student is describing.
Planning the questions to make a phone call to seek transport information eg access for Disabled or mothers with prams.
Where is it? – using a picture or a description
Discussion- Harmony Day
Catching buses on time
Using a photograph of a place you visited, describe it to class.
Use persuasive language to encourage other to go.
Use emotive language to give reasons for not liking a destination
Topic 3 Check both web sites of Translink and . Brisbane City Council for
relevant information.
Research sites for individual attractions. More detailed information can be found using Google.
Construct an Itinerary using “Word” .Include bus times and destinations
Create a Quiz eg oldest historical site?
Investigate how to access other attractions outside the CBD eg Mt Coottha Gardens, New farm Park; use other transport eg City Cat
Check food outlets
Look at Library website
Check current prices and fares on Web
Use Brisbane Office of Meteorology for forecasts when trip is planned.
Topic 4 Use brochure for spelling and comprehension.
Write a scenario –planning a bus trip – Invitations, Itinerary
Create a profile of a visitor- choose sights that would interest him/her and
design an itinerary.
Write a menu for a picnic lunch. Choose a place to eat lunch.
Research an attraction and write a report on it.
Draw / write directions for the bus driver.
Show a friend how to get from A to B
List CBD street names, discuss male and female monarchs that are preserved.
Use a picture of a place, describe where it is.
Letter of suggestions to the Council of how to improve information given in the
brochure.
Construct a new brochure with help of the whole class.
Write up research on the Brisbane River, origin, activities, transport routes.
Write notes for a talk about the River Festival.
Write a visual diary.
