Hosted by Kingston East Neighbourhood Group Inc.

Mavis Burns

‘Understanding & Overcoming Illiteracy’

This interactive workshop will provide an outline of the Life Skills Project (The HUB), an “experiential” session highlighting the dilemmas refugees may experience while learning English and strategies to overcome these.

Mavis Burns (Bed, B Bus)
Mavis is the Co-ordinator and teacher of the HUB project, a Life Skills program with ACCES Services Inc., designed to help newly arrived refugees settle and adapt to the Australian way of life using the Community Literacy Program as a basis. This project has gained national interest due to its holistic approach to responding to all aspects and issues facing newly arrived families. Mavis has had experience working with marginalised groups including disengaged youth, disability groups, and various adult and ESL education programs. She has worked on various Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) projects including developing programs with QBuild and the Retailers Association of Queensland. In addition, she has presented numeracy workshops at QCAL and TAFE conferences as well as literacy workshops for DEEDI that have been enthusiastically received.
