Twilight Workshop

The challenge of unlearning in teaching and learning numeracy as adults

7 November 2003

Presenter:
Dr Keiko Yasukawa

Keiko Yasukawa lectures in adult numeracy education at the University of Technology, Sydney. In her workshop she will engage participants in hands-on activities to demonstrate some of the ‘unlearning’ of mathematics that adult numeracy educators and their learners must do in teaching and learning numeracy. She will demonstrate that the unlearning involves:

  • examining the language that people have learned to talk and think about the mathematical operations they perform (even if the language is in fact mathematically meaningless), and
  • modelling good practice using concrete materials.
