Twilight Seminar

Numeracy: A matter of life and death

Thursday, 26 July 2007

The workshop will look at several perspectives on numeracy, including quantitative literacy, critical numeracy and numeracy-in-context. We will use a numeracy lens to take a fresh look at some current issues, and discuss how these perspectives on numeracy can inform our teaching of adults. We will also look at the lighter side of numeracy, as exhibited by Russell Coight, and the deadly side, as practised by Jack the Ripper.

Speaker - Steve Thornton: Steve Thornton is a lecturer in mathematics education at the University of Canberra, currently undertaking a PhD at Griffith University at Mt Gravatt. His research interests include how students are positioned within the social context of the mathematics classroom and how young people use numeracy across the curriculum and in the workplace.
